Complete guide to China's 144-hour visa-free transit policy for 2026: eligible cities, passport requirements, routing rules, and how to qualify.

China 144-Hour Visa-Free Transit (2026): Cities, Requirements & Routing

China’s 144-hour (6-day) visa-free transit policy allows eligible passport holders to explore major Chinese cities without applying for a visa—if you meet specific routing and nationality requirements.

Who Qualifies?

Eligible nationalities: Citizens of 54 countries including US, Canada, UK, EU, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and more.

Requirements:

  • Valid passport (≥6 months remaining)
  • Confirmed onward ticket to a third country/region (not your origin)
  • Enter and exit through designated ports in the same region

Eligible Cities & Regions (2026)

Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei:

  • Entry/exit ports: Beijing Capital (PEK), Beijing Daxing (PKX), Tianjin Airport/Port
  • Coverage: Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei province

Shanghai-Jiangsu-Zhejiang:

  • Entry/exit ports: Shanghai Pudong (PVG), Shanghai Hongqiao (SHA), Nanjing, Hangzhou airports
  • Coverage: Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang provinces

Guangdong:

  • Entry/exit ports: Guangzhou (CAN), Shenzhen (SZX)
  • Coverage: Guangdong province (including Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Zhuhai)

Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi’an, Dalian, Qingdao, Wuhan, Kunming, Xiamen (individual city policies, check specific port rules).

Routing Rules

Allowed: USA → Shanghai → Tokyo (transit China)
Allowed: London → Beijing → Hong Kong (separate customs region)
Not allowed: USA → Shanghai → USA (return to origin country)
Not allowed: Entry via Shanghai, exit via Guangzhou (different regions)

Key restriction: You must enter and exit through ports in the same administrative region unless specifically allowed (e.g., Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei is one region).

Application Process

  1. At your origin airport: Inform airline you’re using 144-hour visa-free transit
  2. On arrival in China: Proceed to “144-hour Visa-Free Transit” counter (separate from regular immigration)
  3. Documents required: Passport, boarding pass for onward flight, completed arrival card
  4. Processing time: 5–15 minutes (significantly faster than visa-on-arrival queues)

Pro tip: Have your hotel booking and return flight details ready (sometimes requested).

Movement Restrictions

You may travel freely within the designated region but cannot leave it without a full visa. For example:

  • Beijing transit → can visit Tianjin, parts of Hebei
  • Shanghai transit → can visit Suzhou, Hangzhou (both in Jiangsu/Zhejiang)
  • Guangzhou transit → can visit Shenzhen, Zhuhai

Leaving the region = violation → fines, deportation, future visa difficulties.
