Step-by-step guide to setting up WeChat Pay and Alipay before flying to China in 2026. Card linking, Tour Pass, and verification for tourists.

WeChat Pay & Alipay Tourist Setup (2026): Complete Pre-Departure Guide

Cash is rare in China—most places require WeChat Pay or Alipay. Here’s how to set them up before you land.

Why Set Up Before Departure?

Chicken-and-egg problem:

  • Many Chinese services require Chinese phone number
  • Getting Chinese SIM requires WeChat verification
  • WeChat setup works better outside China’s firewall

Solution: Install and link cards at home using “Tour Pass” or international card linking.

What it is: Temporary Alipay wallet (90-day limit) that accepts international Visa/Mastercard.

Setup steps:

  1. Download Alipay app (iOS/Android)
  2. Tap “Me” → “Tour Pass”
  3. Select passport as ID type
  4. Upload passport photo page
  5. Add Visa or Mastercard (Amex not accepted)
  6. Verify with SMS to your home number

Limits:

  • ¥2,000 (~$280 USD) per transaction
  • ¥10,000 (~$1,400) total balance
  • 3% foreign transaction fee (check your card’s fee too)

Best for: Paying at stores, restaurants, metro, taxis

Option 2: WeChat Pay (International Card Linking)

Setup steps:

  1. Download WeChat (not “WeChat Work”)
  2. Register with phone number (your home number works)
  3. Go to “Me” → “Services” → “Wallet”
  4. Tap “Add Payment Method” → “Debit/Credit Card”
  5. Add Visa/Mastercard (international cards supported since 2024)

Limits:

  • ¥200 (~$28) per transaction for new users
  • Increases to ¥2,000 after 5+ successful transactions
  • 3% currency conversion fee

Verification trick: Some foreign cards get rejected. If this happens:

  • Try uploading passport in “Identity Verification” section first
  • Use a card from a major bank (Chase, Citi, HSBC work well)

Best for: Paying friends, mini-programs, small purchases

What You Can Pay For

Widely accepted (both apps):

  • Convenience stores (7-Eleven, FamilyMart)
  • Metro/subway (scan QR at turnstile)
  • Taxis & DiDi (ride-hailing)
  • Restaurants (even street food vendors)
  • Hotels (chain hotels accept; boutique hotels may need cash backup)

May not accept Tour Pass:

  • Train ticket vending machines (use Trip.com app instead)
  • Some online services (Taobao, JD.com)
  • Hospital payments

Backup Payment Methods

Even with WeChat/Alipay, bring:

  • Cash (CNY ¥1,000–2,000): ATMs at airports, major banks accept foreign cards
  • Visa/Mastercard: High-end hotels, some chain stores (但很少 = rare)
  • UnionPay card: More widely accepted than Visa if you have one

Testing Before You Fly

  1. Add ¥100 (~$14 USD) to your Tour Pass
  2. Send ¥1 red packet to yourself in WeChat (tests full loop)
  3. Check balance in app

If it works: You’re set.
If rejected: Contact your card issuer and tell them you’ll be using the card in China (fraud blocks are common).

Common Errors & Fixes

“Identity verification failed”:

  • Re-upload passport (clear photo, all edges visible)
  • Try from better Wi-Fi connection
  • Use passport number exactly as printed (no spaces)

“Card not supported”:

  • Check if card allows international transactions
  • Try different card (Visa over Mastercard has higher success rate)
  • Call your bank and ask if they block “Chinese payment processors”

“Region not available”:

  • VPN sometimes blocks setup. Turn off VPN, try again.
